Computer. Loose papers. Sad bottle of sparkling water. If this is your desk situation at the moment, you may want to consider adding a little flair with this desk-sized Blub Keo Nixie Tube Clock.
While we all have much more intuitive ways to tell time, it’s easy to see why so many people still want these relics from the 1950s around. For one, the way they work is really unique. A series of stainless steel cathodes shaped as numbers are set behind a wire mesh and placed in a tube filled with ionize neon gas. When power is applied to a specific cathode, it gives off an orange glow indicating what time it is. To read out the time – like, 8:15 for instance – it simply flashes 0.8.1.5. Efficient? No. Cool? Most definitely. What separates the ‘Blub Keo’ from others, however, is how much more it can do. Not only can this tell time, but it can it can read out the date, temperature, and serve as a backlight all with the simple click of a remote. Along with better functionality, the tube is placed on top of a sleek aluminum base that plugs in via a mini USB. Prices start at around $300.
