Details continue to emerge as we approach the IKEA Uppleva’s June launch. GigaOM has discovered that the set will be available in sizes ranging from 24 to 46 inches and will be priced “around $960″ — with a scale relative to the display size, we presume. The TV will feature a built-in Blu-ray player and a wireless subwoofer, and is being assembled by TLC, a manufacturer in China. Uppleva is expected to roll out to France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden beginning next month, then to other European countries later in the year, followed by the US in 2013. There will also be a handful of applications that will vary based on region, including Dailymotion, Vimeo and YouTube, along with games, music playback and video-on-demand apps, and the Opera for TV web browser.

Audi has announced that it will debut a new performance e-bike prototype at next week’s Wörthersee Tour car show in the picturesque village of Reifnitz, Austria. Described as a high-end pedelec for sport, fun and tricks, the Audi e-bike Wörthersee features a futuristic carbon fiber frame that houses an onboard computer and a Li-ion battery pack, and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) wheels – both designed to keep the weight down. The prototype offers five travel modes, ranging from pedal-power to electric-only, and inclusive of two “Wheelie” modes where the power is automatically controlled to assist the rider while the front wheel grabs some air.

Footwear is no stranger to practical innovation – in the past we’ve seen biodegradable shoes, foldable zip shoes and even GPS shoes for Alzheimer’s sufferers, among many others. Continuing this string of developments is Hickies, an elastic lace replacement system from New York that aims to do away with the need for tying.

Made from colored rubber, Hickies consist of a thin strip with a hook on one end and a loop on the other. The devices are fed through the eyelets of shoes designed to be laced and then securely fastened, with one Hickie being used for each row of eyelets. As they are made of flexible elastic, Hickies come in one size and can be used to replace the laces in any type of shoe or boot — although the company admits it currently doesn’t cater for wide skate shoes — allowing the wearer to slip their footwear on and off instead of tying and untying. The more fashion-conscious may also welcome the fact that the elastic clips do away with bows, which, in the brand’s own words, “break up the silhouette and lines of the footwear”. Available in a range of colors, Hickies seek to enable customers to match the clips to their shoes or customize their look by choosing their favorite shade.

This year Audemars Piguet is launching the Royal Oak Offshore Diver with a forged carbon case and ceramic bezel. Marking the second model in the ROO Diver line, the watch features the same dimensions as the AP ROO Diver Ref 15703 (42mm, 13.75mm thick) along with the mega-tapisserie dial, inner-rotating timing ring, and the AP Caliber 3120 automatic movement, however the yellow accents and forged carbon case make it a much more striking timepiece.

At the time when Christie’s is drawing its generous proceeds from paintings, rival Sotheby had no choice but to step up to the game. Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein’s 1964 painting “Sleeping Girl” fetched a new record price of $44.9 million at Sotheby’s post-war and contemporary-art sale recently. The sale price of the comic-book style painting by the Pop artist (1923-1997) exceeded its high estimate of $40 million and the previous record of $43.2 million. Forty-two years after his death, Marc Rothko sets records at a Christie’s auction, which, again, has its own reasons to walk down the pages of history. A brilliant camaraderie of three colors, “Orange, Red, Yellow”- Rothko’s timeless creation from 1961, shattered all records for post-war and contemporary art by fetching $87 million. Overflowing with dealers and collectors, the auction room at Christie’s represented a happy and busy place as the gale banged on Barnett New man, Gergard Richter, Alexander Calder and Yves Clain to record-eclipsing quotes. The results had Christie’s authorities smiling all the way. The sale’s total takings-$388,488,000, according to the house sources, are the highest ever fetched at a contemporary art auction since 2007. The tally exceeded the $236-329 million pre-sale estimate by several millions. The current auctions sales, though, are yet to surpass the house’s all-time high evening tally for various-owner sales which, powered by modern art and impressionist pieces, fetched $491 million.The first in the series of three back to back auctions, the evening saw collectors and enthusiasts mouthing new prices every two minutes for the 40-lot consignment from the estate of the late Pennsylvania philanthropist and art collector David Pincus. Thirteen records were set, with forty out of the fifty-six lots making over a million dollars. While nine floated across the ten million dollar mark in effortless disposition, eighteen had to stay content with five million dollars and over. Three, however, found no takers.
As records shattered and bids flew left, right and center, the night marked star auctioneer Christopher Burge’s last appearance before an auction audience. The hall was packed with an unusually high array of abstract expressionist paintings. David Pincus collection includes sculptures and paintings by De Cooning, Pollock, Rothko and Newman.
While the Rothko piece walked away with the biggest honor, the spot light of the grand evening remained on a thirteen lot trove from David Pincus. What was expected to sell for $89.8-125.9 million wound up making a whopping $174.9 million instead.
“Orange Red and Yellow”, it goes without saying, led the pack and sent people into a bidding frenzy. From $24 million, it escalated price charts at one million dollar increments. Rothko’s three color masterpiece outdid his previous record for “Rockefeller Rothko” by $14,160000(approx).

“It has superb quality if that’s your brand of trophy picture. Put in the company of other $50-million-plus pictures and it belongs there”, said Chicago dealer Paul Gray about the record smashing Rothko. The piece was bought by David Pincus in London way back in 1967, three years after it opened there in a solo exhibition.
Rothko’s record comes a week after “The Scream” by Edward Munch became the most expensive artwork sold at an auction, ever. Depicting man’s plight in contemporary world, the Scream went under the hammer at Sotheby’s on May this year. It bagged $120 million, setting record for the biggest sum fetched by a piece of art at auction.

The Rothko creation, in the meantime, knocked out Francis Bacon’s “Triptych” as the priciest postwar artwork in history. With two records smashed and two created in the span of a month, art enthusiasts, it seems, are all poised for a great year ahead.
