Formula 1 cars set to go all electric in the pit lane from 2013 onwards, racing purists outraged already

Formula 1, the pinnacle of gas-powered racing, is more often at odds with the eco-conscious electric car movement than in tune with it, but here’s an exception to that rule. The FIA, the sport’s governing body, announced back in December of last year a move to a hybrid four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is still on track to be introduced in the 2013 season, and Williams boss Adam Parr has now enlightened us on some of the benefits of the new power setup. Noting that future cars’ kinetic energy recovery system will be four times as powerful as on current models, Parr says enough electric juice will be available to power each one-seater through its journey into and out of the pit lane. That would mean that at least for the tame, speed-restricted portions of a race, the F1 gas guzzlers you know and love will be humming along in almost perfect silence while using good old electricity. Unfortunately, it’s exactly that lack of vroom vroom that old timers like Bernie Ecclestone and Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo are afraid of, describing the new hybrid stuff as sounding “terrible” and insisting on the sport sticking to its V8 roots. Then again, as Parr says, if you don’t move with the times, the times leave you behind.Formula 1, the pinnacle of gas-powered racing, is more often at odds with the eco-conscious electric car movement than in tune with it, but here’s an exception to that rule. Pandora supported on new BMW models

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Great news for fans of Pandora who are thinking or purchasing a BMW this year for your next car – the German car manufacturer has announced that all their 2011 and 2012 models will be able be able to support the Pandora Internet radio iPhone app. Starting today, all MY 2011 and 2012 BMW vehicles that have the BMW Apps option will be able to stream Pandora internet radio through the iPhone app. All users have to do is connect the iPhone to the vehicle, and the app can be seamlessly controlled via the vehicle’s existing controls.

It looks like BMW drivers can bring their personal radio stations with them wherever they go. Though the integration with the vehicle’s controls is a nice feature to have, it isn’t really essential to have. In fact, if your phone can already stream Pandora, and you have an AUX-input in your car’s stereo system, you should have no problem letting your music play through the car as well – the only thing missing is the integrated controls with your vehicle. Just make sure you keep your phone juiced with a cable to the power outlet. Anyway, if you have a BMW with BMW Apps enabled head over to the App Store to download the Pandora app for free now.

Bolefloor Hardwood Flooring

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Ever wondered why hardwood floors are always comprised of square, rectangular strips? So did the makers of Bolefloor Hardwood Flooring ($TBA). Using highly advanced technology, this unique solid oak flooring is cut along the grain of the wood, giving it a more natural look, while visual identification technology looks at imperfections like knots and sapwood to make sure the end result is as durable as it is aesthetically pleasing. In addition, cutting the boards in this way allows for better utilization of the wood, helping to preserve our natural resources.

PepsiCo’s New Social Vending Machines

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Not to be outdone by their rival Coca-Cola who was showing off touch-screen equipped vending machines at CES a few years ago, PepsiCo is following suit with their own high-tech sugar water dispensers that will also embrace social networking. The new machines of course let you buy a beverage via a fancy animated UI, complete with swipe controls, but they also let you gift a Pepsi to a friend, or even a complete stranger through “Random Acts of Refreshment”.

All you have to do is enter a friend’s name and cell phone number (I’m sure PepsiCo has NO plans to keep a database of such details) and they’ll receive a txt message with a special code that can be redeemed at any of the interactive machines. You even have the option of recording a 10-second personalized video message that will be played back when they redeem it. Or, you can send a caffeinated gift to a complete stranger in a different city if you’re feeling particularly philanthropic. There’s no specific word on when the new machines will start appearing, though a prototype will be on display from April 27 to the 29 at the National Automatic Merchandising Association’s One Show in Chicago.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 Limited Edition

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Today Porsche finally revealed the new 911 GT3 RS 4.0 limited edition. This new car marks the last limited edition GT3 RS based on the current Carrera 911 design. The 4.0 liter engine is packed with 500 horsepower and just all around the latest in what a street supercar can offer. The suspension, vehicle weight, brakes and overall design have of course also been improved. The minimalist and sporty interior came out beautiful, especially due to the heavy use of carbon fibre. We love the retro styling of the exterior of the car, perfectly in line of what we have been seeing from the Porsche racing division for so many years already. The car will go on sale in Germany July 2011 and is limited to 600 units worldwide in either black or white.

Just add a receiver, screen, projector, and a copious amount of popcorn.
