Real Life NO Sign

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Well now this 3D fad has just gone too far. I was ok with movies, have come to appreciate it when it comes to handheld gaming, am indifferent towards 3D TV, but those red circle with a line through it signs telling me what not to do? Come on! Personally I think they’re fine when left in the 2D realm, but apparently someone, somewhere feels they need to jump on the 3D bandwagon. On the plus side they don’t require those shutter glasses which is nice, since you simply stick whatever real-life object is not allowed under the elastic strap. $19.90 from Animi Causa.

Witness Turns Your Mac and iPhone into a Burglar Alarm

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

If you own both a Mac and an iPad, it’s a fair bet that you also have a home stuffed with other electronic gear, the kind of gear that burglars like to, well, burglarize. Luckily, there’s an app for that.

It’s called Witness, and it turns your Mac into a motion-activated security camera. When running, it monitors your room with using the iSight camera, and when it detects movement it sends an alert to your iPhone or iPad.

Included with the alert are photos and videos, so you can either rest easy knowing that Kitty has jumped up on the desk again, or watch in horror as your home is emptied miles from where you are standing.

Forgot to activate the alarm? You can do it remotely from the phone.

Witness seems like a great idea, but for a couple of things: you need to leave your Mac running 24/7 while you are away, which is something of a waste of electricity. It also requires an internet connection, so the smart thief could just cut the power on entry — it’s pretty unlikely that your Mac is out in the hallway where the breakers are often kept.

Aside from this, though, it’s nice not to be worrying about the house when you’re out. The Mac App costs $40, and the companion iOS app is free.

Prince Charles’ Ferrari Daytona Up for Auction

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

A very special Ferrari is set to cross the auction block in May. One of only 1,400 examples made, and only 158 in right-hand drive, this metallic blue 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona has some very prominent provenance indeed.

Chassis #16531 most recently appeared on an episode of the hit BBC television program Top Gear, where celebrity presenter Richard Hammond drove it along the riviera from Portofino to Saint-Tropez while his co-host James May raced him in a speedboat. But long before the filming of the episode, its first owner was none other than HRH Charles, Prince of Wales. The car is being auctioned by Historics at Brooklands and is expected to fetch around £180,000 – £210,000.

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Butler For Hire is aiming to make the traditional picnic altogether less stressful.

Netherlands-based Butler For Hire’s service runs from April to August in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam. Upon receiving a booking, a butler is sent to the park to set up the picnic, consisting of crystal glasses, picnic rugs, china crockery, pillows, and a menu of hams, cheeses, breads, jams, chicken legs, salads and wine. All of this is available for EUR 30 per person. For those who like to picnic in style, extras are available at an additional charge, such as Prosecco, champagne, lobster, oysters, prawns, shrimps and salmon. Once the picnickers have put aside their desire for food and drink and are ready to go home, a phone call to Butler For Hire signals it is time for the butler to return and clear up.

In addition to the picnics, Butler For Hire can provide dinner and breakfast services, providing the same level of personal care at home. Services such as these can often leave the user with a sense of exclusivity and elevated status, which carries huge appeal.
