A Soviet space capsule is estimated to fetch up to $10 million

Monday, February 28th, 2011

If you have a couple of millions to spare, here’s a dream buy for you. For sale at Sotheby’s in New York is a vehicle slightly damaged but offers extremely high mileage. We are talking about a historic Soviet space ship, worth every penny. There seems to be much fascination for space objects among the wealthy. Previously an original Space Shuttle Orbiter, a Russian spacesuit and Nasa’s space shuttle were all known to go under the hammer. Sotheby’s will auction the spherical Vostok 3KA-2 Space Capsule on April 12th, the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight by Soviet pilot Yury Gagarin with a pre-sale estimate of $2 million to $10 million. The battered craft served as the model used for the final dummy run before Gagarin left on his mission and is probably the only example outside of Russia of the world’s first spacecraft. Ahead of the auction the craft can be viewed in the Manhattan lobby of Sotheby’s.

Mac OS X Lion Migration Assistant Update Makes PC to Mac Move a Bit Easier

Monday, February 28th, 2011

PC owners jonesing for the new MacBook Pros (or any future Mac, we suppose) would do well to take a quick look at what’s coming down the pipeline with Mac OS X Lion. Mainly Migration Assistant’s PC-to-Mac transfer improvements.

As I can attest, Migration Assistant was handy in a pinch when I bought my MacBook Air. After a few clicks here and a password there, the old machine (MacBook, cracked white case, faulty screen) was coughing up the goods to the new one (the Air), all over my apartment’s wifi network. It took a while, sure, but my input was largely minimal and pain free.

Now, it would seem, similar functionality is coming for PC users looking to make the switch to Mac, all courtesy Lion and a MigrationAssistantSetup.exe program that will act as a client for Migration Assistant, from which it will pull your files and other data as it completes the transfer.

Fisker Karma production to start March 21st

Monday, February 28th, 2011

The Fisker Karma’s official production date is set for March 21st. Yeah. That’s right. Fisker now claims that the luxury plug-in hybrid will roll off assembly lines in Finland near the tail end of March, with deliveries set to commence in April. So we’re told.

The oft-delayed Karma missed its initial November 2009 launch, failed to hit the market in time for its September 2010 debut and was delayed again, slipping past its February 2011 production date. However, the buzz on the interwebs seems to indicate that Fisker may actually deliver on its promise this time around.

Fisker claims 3,000 eager buyers have forked over $5,000 to reserve the $95,900 Karma and still insists that it aims to sell 15,000 of them a year, but not in 2011. The Karma’s delayed launched has forced Fisker to revise 2011 production numbers. The company now says that 1,500 Karmas will come charging off the assembly lines per month beginning in October. We’re ready.

LifeProof iPhone 4 Case Makes Your Handset Sake Bomb Safe, Just 1.6mm Thick

Monday, February 28th, 2011

With most, if not all iPhone cases that provide superior protection comes the caveat of added bulk.  And by added bulk we mean an unsightly bulge in your pocket.

The iPhone 4 LifeProof case however, sports a full IP-68 military rating yet only adds 1.5mm of thickness to your Apple handset.  While we’re always skeptical about submerging any electronic device, the maker says that it can withstand 6.6 feet of water in addition to a 6.6 foot drop to the ground.  They’ve even got an optional adapter that allows the use of waterproof headphones.

But, one thing.  The iPhone 4 Lifeproof case is under production.  So yes, we’re a bit skeptical since they might be trying to draw enough preorders to fund the case’s development, but I suppose it might be worth the leap of faith, especially seeing as your credit card will surely refund you if the case never sees the light of day.

The LifeProof iPhone 4 case is available now for $69.99

Creditor Carbon Fiber Money Clip Knife

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Designed by John Kubasek, the Creditor Carbon Fiber Money Clip Knife ($200) is a cunning combination of materials and functionality, featuring a carbon fiber and titanium body that folds to become credit card size — hence the name — while a clip holds your cash and cards, but press down on the side of the handle and it unlocks to become a handy six-inch blade. It can even fit into another wallet with the clip removed. Just be careful not to inadvertently cut your money in half — nothing says “shady” like paying for your Starbucks with a taped-together twenty.

Eberhard & Co. Chrono 4 Geant Titanium Limited Edition Watch

Monday, February 28th, 2011

I’ve always liked these chronograph watches from Eberhard & Co. that have four small chronograph subdials in a horizontal row on the lower half of the dial. They function just like a normal chronograph, with the additional subdial being used as a synchronized 24 hour hand for AM/PM indication purposes. The movement of course also has the time and the date. It is a special module done by Eberhard & Co. on top of a base Swiss ETA 2894 automatic chronograph movement. The layout makes this watch feel like a much more impressive “instrument” compared to most other sport watches.
