Club Vendome Mayfair – London

Fed up with the minimalist design aesthetic that many a upscale West End venue has adopted over the past decade, club guru Freddie Frampton and interior designer Paul Daly got together to see what they could do to fix all this. And fixed it they have.

uk2.jpg

The club is beautifully finished and has been designed to induce patrons back onto the dance floor. And why wouldn’t you want to dance when the club has installed possibly one of the coolest dance floors that we have seen in a while. The circular interactive video floor cost over a quarter of a million pounds and can display film footage, graphic effects, logos etc. It is topped off with a raised, revolving DJ booth/bar in the centre. Think 70s disco floor meets the future.
Off to the left of the floor are six individually themed VIP booths, each having being designed by the likes of Jade Jagger, fashion label Core and Dom Perignon.

The club has a distinct retro/futuristic feel, part mirror maze, part Xanadu, part upper-class Jetsons space shuttle, and is sure to be a hit with London’s glamorous Mayfair set (read socialites, WAGs and the occasional reality-TV star).

A chair or a piece of art?

Visually, this chair by Kedar Naik seems like the perfect way to relax after a long day’s work. Its winding graceful lines seem to impose no constraints on the user’s body save its own natural form. That being said, the Glide chair’s only cited materials are aluminum and lacquered fiberglass, neither of which strike me as particularly comfortable. Perhaps this is a piece best put artfully in a corner and pointed to whenever one has guests.

 games2u.jpg

Although video games and laser tag are a popular choice for kids’ parties, getting the kids to venues can be more hassle than it’s worth. Back in January, Texas-based Games2u stepped in to solve this problem with its mobile video game theatres—self-powered, climate controlled trailers that house X-Box 360, Wii and PS3 systems, enabling up to 24 players to compete head-to-head. For parents who’d rather see their children running around outdoors, the company’s Sprinter trailers contain a range of inflatable bunkers and laser guns to turn yards and fields into laser tag battlegrounds in an instant.

Thanks to its installation of multiple 50-inch flatscreen HDTV displays and surround sound, the trailer provides customers with a much more immersive gaming experience than they could create in their own homes. Each mobile theatre is accompanied by a trained Game Coach who oversees the event and keep players engaged, allowing parents to sit back and relax. Parties start at USD 199 for one hour, USD 299 for two hours and USD 99 for every additional hour.

Brick-Like USB Multi-Cellular Phone Charger

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

block_charger.jpg

If I owned and actively used 8 different cellphones from 8 different manufacturers I’d probably prefer to carry this multi-charger brick over a messy bundle of charging cables, but I don’t think I’m ever going to be in that position. The charger’s available from USB.Brando.com.hk for just $18 and includes jacks for Motorola I, Motorola II/Mini USB, Nokia I, Nokia II, Samsung and Sony Ericsson I & II phones. While the product shots show it recharging a Nokia phone without any problems, it seems to me that things could get a bit awkward when connecting other models, not to mention the fact that you’ll probably need a flat place to put everything, which makes this problematic for use in places like airports where you’ll probably need it the most.

Lamborghini’s New $30 Million Vegas Megaplex

All phases of Dal Toro, Lamborghini’s 20,000-sq.-ft., $30 million megaplex showroom / restaurant / boutique / nightclub / art gallery at the Palazzo Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas, are now open for business. Designed by renowned Italian architect Paolo Cortese, the 300-seat restaurant with its backdrop of supercars features black-and-white marble floors, wall-to-wall black leather paneling, silk fabrics, and glass-enclosed wine cellars with private dining tables.

The venue boasts over $2 million worth of artwork including the Charging Bull – the same as the famous one on Wall Street, and identical to the Lamborghini logo – by renowned Italian artist, Arturo di Modica, and paintings by German contemporary artist Horst Kohlem. There’s also a club called the UltraLounge in the lower level, and the world’s first Lamborghini fashion boutique carrying everything from polo shirts to iPod cases. And if you really want, they’ll even sell you a Ferrari or Bugatti instead.

The Chanel Experience

A glass of expensive champagne on a swanky rooftop bar just doesn’t cut it in the competitive world of product launches, which are all vying for VIP attendees and press coverage.

Chanel decided to think outside of the square for the launch of the brand’s new perfume, ‘Eau première,’ staging the event at a private Parisian apartment. Chanel recruited acclaimed set, window and interior designer Jean-Marc Gady to create an experiential event for guests, a “scenography” tasked with bringing the new fragrance and the heritage of the brand to life. Gady has created spaces for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Moet & Chandon and Apple.

The designer transformed the apartment into a set, which guests were encouraged to explore as the event played out.  While they played with artfully arranged test sprays,  a fountain sent drops of the new fragrance into the air, sweetly permeating their senses.  The evening ended with the unveiling of large format photographs of Chanel’s iconic “faces” over the years, from Marilyn Monroe through to Nicole Kidman.

Samsonite’s Rolling Bag, Literally

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

obag.jpg

The brainchild of designer Rooz Mousavi, the Samsonite OBAG is a roll-on bag that literally rolls on. Its rugged exterior makes it ideal for snow or any nasty weather conditions for that matter. By augmenting the design into a giant wheel, less energy is required on your part to maneuver it. It’s even easier to drag up and down stairways in this configuration. The 2 storage compartments are on the sides and the handle collapses to slide OBAG under your bed.
