Jean Nouvel has won the Pritzker Prize, the world’s most prestigious architecture award. And for a good reason, because his work is simply amazing. We love Nouvel’s for many reasons, from his irregular shapes and spaces, to the use of plants and color LEDs to create almost surreal, night-city creatures that seem taken from a science fiction movie.

house-of-bols_481.jpg

Cocktail lounges for long have been hip, haute and happening places where the swish set usually hang around. Taking the Coctail lounge concept to stratospheric heights is the super-bling, House of Bols Cocktail and Genever Experience, at Amsterdam. This, fast becoming tourist attraction, is actually a cocktail bar/ museum unlike any other in the whole wide world and coming from the world’s oldest spirit maker, Lucas Bols, expect it to be one contemporary yet a character filled place. To give you a perspective of how old the Lucas Bols company really is, how about an ancient 1575 when it all began. Coming to the BCGE itself, everything about this place is bling, sensory and awe inspiring. Right from it’s design which has won the prestigious Dutch design award for the best exhibition and experience award, this place reeks of pizzas. To get a full blown experience of this place, you can take a self-guided tour into its rich innards. The biggest head turner there is the Diamond Cocktail Shaker. This unique Boston Shaker is made up of silver and 18 carat gold, inlaid with no less than 480 brilliant-cut diamonds, with a total weight of 19.05 carats.

A well known 18 year old graffiti artist that goes by the name “Skullphone” has expanded his repertoire of vandalism to include 10 digital billboards around L.A. Earlier this week, onlookers were treated to Skullphones’s calling card in between the normal ads running on the display. Nice work dude, let’s hope that the police and the folks at ClearChannel appreciate art.

The New Movie Theater

We don’t go to the movies to admire the theater, but would it kill theater owners to build even one with an edge? Time and time again, we are disappointed in the new, mega multiplexes that are boring beyond belief in their sameness and recycled ideas. So, we must admit that there is not much to celebrate but are seeing little glimmers of hope and ingenuity once in a while.

One example is the AMC Pacific Place Cinema in Hong Kong refurbished by Hong Kong-based James Law. The entrance areas to the six auditoriums seating 600 in 1.2-meter wide leather seats plus the a VIP theatre for 39.

The new generation does not mindlessly wave away traditions. In fact, things reappearing in a new and improved Avaatar are often eagerly accepted. Take for instance the La Sorrentina Atomic age coffee machine. It was designed as far back as the late 40s by Milan designer Giordano Robbiati. After so many years, it retains its popularity as it makes a comeback. And with good reason. La Sorrentina retains its original design, which adds some old-world charm to it.
