4N wristwatch delivers digital time in a mechanical fashion

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Given how simple we’ve made timekeeping over the years, it was inevitable that luxury watches would have to move into more esoteric lands in order to exude the appropriate sense of wonder when witnessed by those who can’t afford them. You might call that the Xperia Pureness effect. Ergo, quite aside from its platinum or 18-carat gold construction options, the 4N watch tries to grab the spotlight with its quirky disc-based mechanism, which rotates numbers (four numbers, hence 4N) into position to display a digital readout of the time. The fact that all three discs — built out of aluminum or a titanium alloy — and the MVT01 movement are exposed to the eye earns geek cred from us, while the limited run of only 16 units should ensure the desired exclusivity for the watches’ future owners. As the old saying about price goes, if you have to ask, you can’t afford one.

OXY Unisex Concept Watch

It seems like eBook readers aren’t the only things getting the E-ink display technology. This concept watch – OXY also sports a pretty E-ink display. This unisex watch can display the usual stuff like time, date, calendar and alarm. It’s made from stainless steel, has colored leather strap combos, and the display is encased in mineral glass. The XKSALIA Typography that is used to display the time seems to go rather well with this design too. Do you think it’s cool enough to deserve being converted into a mass produced item?

The Classicist: Daniel Craig’s Custom Rolex by Project X Designs

Project X Designs, a new London-based Rolex customizer, has already won some high-profile fans including James Bond himself - Daniel Craig. Project X, which also produces its own Limited Edition Rolex designs in small runs, began with a custom Submariner and Daytona a few months ago which have nearly all sold out. Two new Daytona models have just been released. Founder Daniel Bourn, 37, also launched the London Watch Company in 2003 which specializes in building collections of vintage “investment grade” Rolexes for private clients. Bourn is actually a former investment banker who developed an “obsessive compulsion” for collecting rare, modern and vintage luxury watches and decided to change careers.

Bourn launched Project X Designs (PXD), which has offices in Hanover Square, London W1, out of a desire to “provide a service to clients who appreciate the history and allure of original manufacturers’ brand name – guaranteeing maximum performance with minimal maintenance – but who seek the individuality that contemporary high volume production does not offer.” It’s an aesthetic that appeals to celebs like Kanye West - The Classicist reported on his blacked-out Rolex earlier this year - and Craig, a diehard Rolex enthusiast as we noted last year, who owns PXD’s custom Submariner.

PXD offers two distinct services via its website: the first, a bespoke service which, like a bespoke suit, tailors a new luxury wristwatch with unique features to the clients’ own personal specification. For example, a leading Formula One Racing Team have commissioned a special Daytona - carrying the company logo on the reverse together with the details of the race victory - for each of its Grand Prix winning drivers. Ex Bond actor Roger Moore also has a bespoke watch in development from PXD. The second element of PXD is the introduction of collectible limited edition (runs of 24) customized Rolex watches inspired by the retro styling of the classic Rolex models from the past.

TAG Heuer’s indescribable bold design language, in terms of haute horological creations, gained them a truly distinctive reputation, which finds admiration of trophy hunters all over the world. For their 150th anniversary, TAG Heuer realized a masterpiece, named Monaco V4, which over-engineered movement probably presents the 21st century’s first major contribution to watchmaking innovation. The overall open-view construction even offers a glance at the intricate belt-driven mechanics from the front, elegantly interrupted by the striking blue rhodium plated hour, minute and second hands. The intriguing innovation takes place on the backside, where the automatic belt-driven transmission can be admired and its harmonically moving two pairs of barrels in series, set in parallel and linked by belts with Tungstene ingot linear mass. The 40.5mm case is made of platinum with an 18kt white gold crown, and comes with a subtly blued or plain black alligator strap.

The Watch Galley Store Website Now With 360 Degree Watch Views

Choosing your new watch online just got easier. The days of messing with snobby retailers and hard sells are no longer a requirement of indulging in your beloved passion for watches. The Watch Gallery website has been steadily using its special camera to take 360 degree photo shoots of their watches. I checked out their handiwork on some Tag Heuer watches and was pleased with the results. No more mere marketing shots and the wrong angles. Now you get views of the actual watch from front to back, and side to side. This is a big help to give you a good idea of what you’ve never see looks like in reality. Marketing images are often touched up quite a bit, and it is not always possible to understand how light actually makes the watches we love look. Not all of their watches have this special view, but they are increasing the number of high quality 360 degree images they offer. Hopefully they will allow you to zoom in as well. You can see other Tag Heuer watches photographed like this here. Other brands get this photo treatment as well.
