Custom iPhone 4 Leica M9 Skin

There are two known truths in the gadget world — that the iPhone 4 has a great camera for a phone, and that the Leica M9 is one of the coolest looking cameras ever. So San Francisco photographer Joey Celis is kinda a genius for designing this Leica M9 iPhone Skin. Sadly, it’s not going to be made for sale — Celis considers it a “one-off”. Definitely makes him cooler than the rest of us iPhone users, though.

Touchscreen iPod Nano

ipod-nano-2010-650x202.jpg

There is an all new iPod Nano.  Unlike previous iterations of the device is has a touchscreen and comes in an 8GB and 16GB version for $149 and $179 respectively.  There is no home button, so to get to the home screen you simply hold down any where on the screen.  Size wise it looks smaller than all previous iterations and does sport a smaller screen (1.54-inches vs 2.2-inches).  Also expect an FM radio (with live pause up to 15 minutes), Genius, accelerometer, a built-in belt clip and a 24 hour battery life.  Like the iPod Shuffle, the new Nano will now read to you what is on screen so you don’t have to look.

The all new iPod Nano with touchscreen will ship sometime next week.

eBay Fashion App For The iPhone Further Entices Spending

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

ebay-fashion-app.jpg

eBay is a treasure trove of fashion items. In addition to their massive volume of auctions - for both new and used items, they have stepped into the direct selling game by offing exclusive deals and offers during special sales events. In fact, there is so much eBay offers for the spend-happy fashionista, it can be confusing trying to figure it all out. There are a few eBay Apps for the iPhone and the iPad, but a new app is out exclusively for those shopping for fashion items and accessories. This includes clothes and related stuff for both men and women, as well as children.

The eBay Fashion App is quite streamlined and easy to use. You can easily search through eBay’s auctions via special selection tools oriented to finding clothes and related matter. The menus and search tools are dead simple, and the standard eBay auction layout has been thoughtfully adapted to the iPhone screen. This means you can easily switch between viewing the item images, description, and auction information with out lots of scrolling.

Aside from enjoyable item browsing as well as details searches, the eBay Fashion App has some other interesting features. One is called the “Vault.” Regular users of the app can learn about upcoming sales on select new items from certain brands. In the image above, there is an example of an upcoming Brooks Brothers sale, that is due to go live on a specific date. This is like an eBay version of a invitee only discount sale. During the sale period, you can view the items, and new sales are scheduled all the time.

The Closet feature is fun as well. You can use a small heart icon to save items and keep them in your closet. When viewing the closet, you can look through your saved items, and virtually put them together like you are choosing outfits to see how they go together. The system isn’t terrible sophisticated, but is a fun tool for when you want to see how a top goes with a bottom, etc…

Because eBay wants you to use the app to buy items and bid on auction, the app is of course free. If you are keen on searching for new and old clothes, and other fashion items (really anything from shoes, to handbags, and watches), the app is ideal. Plus, while it is designed for the Fashion crowed, the app of course doesn’t limit your searches to eBay’s fashion items. I am pretty sure you can search anything on eBay with the app.

GEAR4 UnityRemote Saves Your iPhone From Cumbersome Dongles

unity_remote.jpg

I like the idea of using an iPhone or an iPod Touch as a universal remote, but I’m not so crazy about having to stick it in a case, or attach some cumbersome dongle to give it IR functionality. So I really like the solution that GEAR4 has come up with for their UnityRemote. Instead of some accessory you have to attach to your device, a downloadable app talks to a separate Bluetooth controlled receiver that uses 5 infrared emitters to blast out commands in 360 degrees. That way you don’t have to worry about pointing your iPhone or iPod Touch in the right direction either. It’s not going to be available until October according to the GEAR4 website, so there’s not a lot of details available at the moment, but according to The Gadgeteer it will sell for $99. That’s pretty much $90 more than other options like the My TV Remote, so you’ll have to decide if the convenience is worth the extra coin.

Just don’t hook it up to the iHome in your bedroom, unless of course you want Coach K whispering sweet nothings in your ear as you rest.

Users of Skype for the iPhone will be joyous to hear that they can now receive background Skype calls while using iOS 4 on the iPhone 4 and 3GS. A notification will pop up, which you can then answr while continuing to use other apps. Excellent. Best of all, they won’t be charging for using the feature over 3G. You can download it from the App Store right now.

Exolife battery case gives your iPhone 4 a juice boost

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

exolife-battery-case.jpg

The new generation of smartphones tend to guzzle power like nobody’s business, and ask any smartphone owner who have all the bells and whistles turned on just how long said handset can last. Most of them will need to be juiced up at the end of the day before you retire for the night, and this is even without using your device to play MP3 songs while you’re waiting for your daily commute. Exolife hopes to provide a little bit of power boost to an iPhone with its new battery case which doesn’t look too shabby, offering a slim and light form factor that tips the scales at just 59 grams - this includes a rechargeable Lithium polymer battery. Nice to see an illuminated power meter tell you whether it needs to be juiced up further or not. Expect to see the Exolife battery case sometime at the end of July for $90 a pop.

Kodak ESP Office 6150 AiO Printer Offers Printing from Smartphones

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

kodak-6150-540x309.jpg

Considering the amount of time people spend on their mobile devices, especially their smartphones, you’d think that printing from them would be pretty commonplace by now. Especially with the fact that they’re all fused with WiFi and Bluetooth. But, it’s still not everywhere quite yet, so when Kodak announces a brand new printer that features the missing link, well, we get pretty excited.

Kodak is still saying that they’ve got the cheapest total ink replacement in the market, and that’s all well and good for them. The 6150 AiO Printer features 4-in-1 flexibility, offering up print, scan, fax, and copy all in the same unit. It has the latest technology when it comes to WiFi, and Kodak is positive that you’ll be happy with how easy it is to set up. It has an “intuitive control panel,” which means you’ll be able to do all your paper needs from both a touchscreen display, as well as a more physical, button-filled fashion.

But, as we mentioned above, the single best feature is the fact that you can choose to print what you want from your smartphone. As of right now, Kodak has support for BlackBerry devices, and thanks to a brand new application that you can find in Apple’s App Store, called Kodak Pic Flick App, you can print from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, while on the go. You can order your very own 6150 AiO printer from Kodak’s website for $229.99 right now if it’s caught your attention.

Apple Leaks iWork for iPhone

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

iwork-slipup.jpg
Can you spot the difference between the two iPhone shots above? Both come from the “mail” page in Apple’s new iPhone 4 features section. The one on the left was posted yesterday after Steve Jobs’ presentation. The one on the right quickly replaced it when Apple presumably realized it had leaked its own product.

As you can see, the option is given to open a presentation in Keynote, Apple’s PowerPoint-like presentation application. The thing is, right now it doesn’t exist for the iPhone: the iWork suite of which Keynote is a part is only available for the Mac and the iPad. It looks like that may change.

The weirdest part is that the wording of the email in the background remains unchanged, and clearly refers to a presentation, not an EPUB book or PDF, which are the files that can be opened by iBooks.

Why would anybody want Keynote, or even Pages or Numbers (Apple’s word processing and spreadsheet apps) for a cellphone? My guess is that you’ll use them for viewing. With its new high-resolution display, it’s likely that iPhone 4 will also output hi-def video. Thought the iPad made a great, portable machine for hooking up to a projector and making presentations? What about doing that with your phone?
