We are seeing more and more stores and services dedicated solely to the fine things in life for men. Salons, shops and spas are realizing that men have been treated like second-class citizens when it comes to luxurious, beautiful retail environments.

There are millions of sports bars, car dealerships, gyms and hardware stores, but that is definitely not all that men need and want. At New York Fashion Week, British luxury men’s brand Alfred Dunhill showcased its Winter 2010 collection in a vacant Meatpacking District warehouse transformed into a pop-up shop.

With aluminum panels and projection technology, London-based design workshop Campaign created an environment that brought a little bit of Dunhill’s London flagship store to New York.

Marcel Wanders United Crystal Wood Collection from Baccarat

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Luxist attended the premiere of the United Crystal Woods collection, from famed Dutch designer Marcel Wanders for Baccarat, held at the Museum of Arts & Design, with a gorgeous view of Columbus Circle. Baccarat, winner of the Luxist Readers’ Choice Award is the ultimate in luxury glassware. Each piece is entirely handmade in the Baccarat village of France. The heavy weighted crystal of the classic Baccarat we were handed when entering made the champagne taste divine. We quickly realized, while exploring the latest collection, that drinking out of a Baccarat glass is the ONLY way to drink champagne.

Wanders has collaborated over the years with nearly every major designer, including Flor, Vitra, B&B Italia and Bisazza. But nothing could prepare us for the latest Baccarat collection, easily Wander’s best collaboration to date. It all began with a dream Wanders had, after a long dinner party, waking up with his head on the table, in a room full of gorgeous empty glasses. “I woke up in the forest of the united crystals,” he said in his artist statement. “Too much light forcing me to close my eyes, too many sparkles for a heavy night, boys will always be boys.”

We have seen an infinite number of home furnishings that are perfect for any room or décor, but this aesthetically appealing piece dubbed Giro is functionally mind boggling that can truly fit any décor or any room. What appears to be based on Rubik’s cube is actually a concept that can be reassembled to create new compositions. The modules of this integrated cubic system can be stacked and combined side by side - lengthwise, diagonally or even in an overhanging configuration. It’s just to say that your imagination is the limit. The various elements slot together, and a special mechanism allows them to slid sideways and even rotated 180° around. Just touch anywhere and the drawers, flaps and doors simply open up. Given its diverse functionality, it can be overwhelming to think where it can fit. Available in all the possible color varnishes, this innovative concept is finally “one-size-fits-all” in the home furnishings.

Tell Us Everything, Event Designer Preston Bailey

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

preston-trees.jpg

Last week, high-end event planner Preston Bailey gathered hundreds in the sprawling 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan to celebrate the launch of his fourth book, “Preston Bailey Celebrations.” The gorgeous book is filled with images of the lavish events he’s designed the world over (with rates starting at $250,000), from a stunning Tiffany-glass inspired wedding in New York to a reception with giant floral animals in Bali. So you can expect his own party would be a stunner - not to mention celebrity-tinged.

Bailey created a magical environment with no shortage of glitz (above). Two giant disco balls dramatically projected light throughout the room and dreamlike trees glowed at the entrance. A giant runway ran down the middle of the room, which was projected with a rotating image of pages from his book, giving it the illusion of a printing press. The runway served as a stage for performers such as Martha “Everybody Dance Now” Wash and Gloria Gaynor, then later was filled with attendees dancing. Bailey was true to his theory that a diverse crowd makes for the best parties. He was feted by quite a diverse crowd.

If you are wondering what the future of kitchens will be, well, we have seen it and it’s high-tech. Offering a glimpse of trends of what our kitchens will hold in the future, “Kitchen Concept 2015″ focuses on design, convenience, ergonomics, electrification and multimedia networking. Designed by Hettich, the Kitchen Concept 2015 has utilized the electric kitchen furniture elements along with the possibilities in many application scenarios. Disguised as a piece of modern art, the concept makes extra effort not to become a social gathering spot of the house rather it is integrated in the home environment to limit the space needed by appliances. While the concept looks forward to more innovations as the technology makes improvement, it already looks closer to reality than it appeared at the first glance.
