Christian Louboutin launches a book to celebrate 20 years of shoe-designing

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

If you thought Christian Louboutin was just obsessed with shoes, you are right, somewhat. The celebrated shoe designer is finally out with his first book that seems to have more than a collection of his precious stilettos. And the book should be moving, as famous names like John Malkovich and David Lynch have been roped in as collaborators. Styled as a biography of sorts it’s also retrospective and filled with classy images. The foreword has been penned by John Malkovich, with an entire chapter dedicate to his work for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, one and about the “the interiors of his boutiques around the world” and even one on “20 years of design” that is packed with self portraits and editorials. Also watch out for the chapter that talks about his collaboration with filmmaker David Lynch called “Fetish”.

Max100

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Almost 25 years since it debuted, the original Air Max 1 was not only the first Nike with a visible air pocket, but was also designed by an honest-to-goodness architect. And the only person who might love the Air Max 1 more than us is Matt Stevens. Last year, he decided to create a visual interpretation (drawing, painting, pancake, air freshener, what have you) of the sneaker every day for a month. Now, he’s bundling all of those up and doing 40 new ones for Max100 ($50). The art book for sneakerheads features exactly 100 illustrations of the greatest running shoe of all time.

Star Wars: The Blueprints

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

While there have been many books over the years that contained blueprints of the fictional ships and weaponry in the Star Wars universe, this is the first to include the original blueprints used for the creation of the sets and props of all six films. Pulled from the Lucasfilm Archives, the blueprints are accompanied by commentary from author J. W. Rinzler and provide an in-depth look at the art and science behind the filming and post-production of the epic sci-fi series.

Most importantly, Blueprints shows how in bringing this extraordinary epic to life, the world of special effects as we know it was born. For the first time, here you will see the initial concepts behind such iconic Star Wars scenes as the Rebel blockade runner hallways, the bridge of General Grievous’s flagship, the interior of the fastest “hunk of junk” in the Galaxy, and Jabba the Hutt’s palace. Never before seen craftsmanship and artistry is evident whether floating on the Death Star, escaping on a speeder bike, or exploring the Tatooine Homestead.

Star Wars: The Blueprints will only be available in a limited edition, hand-numbered run of 5,000 copies. The first 125 are signed by the Academy-Award winning Art Directors for the original Star Wars film: Norman Reynolds, Les Dilley and set dresser Roger Christian, and will set you back a cool grand. While the remaining 4,875 copies are just $500 each.

Lockdown High: how schools put the emphasis on crime, security and violence instead of freedom and education

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

The Guardian’s John Harris reviews Annette Fuentes’s Lockdown High: When the Schoolhouse Becomes a Jailhouse, an investigative book on how “zero tolerance” policies have produced high-schools that “reflect a society that has become fixated on crime, security and violence.” Harris points out that the insanity isn’t a mere American phenomenon, and has been enthusiastically embraced in the UK, where things are about to get much worse.
