Mahogany Strand Craft 39′ Coupe yacht tender by Bo Zolland is for retro lovers

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

For those who are planning for their cruises at sea next year, and looking at retro styles of vessels, the new Mahogany Strand Craft 39’ coupe tender yacht by Bo Zolland may be the toy you are looking for. Using aerodynamic designing and high-end fabric such as mahogany wood, the Swedish boat maker has managed to bring in every bit the retro essence to the vessel, where as taking care of the discerning speed boat fans. Using a new concept called ‘tumble home’, the boat features a modern style driver’s cabin on the aft deck, which has been given a retractable glass roof. Keeping in mind the tapering smoothness of the hull, and aerodynamic designing, the cabin blends in perfectly with the rest of the design. The mahogany top of the aft deck then comes as a contrasting appeal by bringing in an aura of classical high-end make to otherwise modern styling of the body. The lower end of the boat then shows some sharpness with the lower contrast skirting and some wooden edges located towards the end of the boat. Like the general theme with the rest, this lends another aesthetic dimension of retro designing. To ensure that perfection is achieved the artist Zolland himself ensures that the construction is done mostly by him, so that the demanding customer won’t have much to complain about.
About the technical standpoint of the boat, the Volvo Penta IPS inboard system is the new element in this boat. The exact functional advantages are known to the expert engineers of the company mainly, it it is certainly known to be a state of the art mechanism used in the yachting industry. Helps in better control and management of the boat is what we know. In terms of customizations, the customers can always ask for various colors and abstract shades, apart from fabrics such as carbon fiber to be used on the exteriors. There has already been an instance when a customer has asked his tender yacht to be made with it. However, for the interior there are the upholstery design which can be worked upon, and any other fancy amenities one can think of. Also, if you have a greater need for space, the tender yacht can also be availed in the 45’ model.

Numptia Super Yacht

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Those in the market for a megayacht are already familiar with the 70-meter (229-foot) Numptia. There isn’t a luxury yachting magazine on the planet that hasn’t noticed it. Some at the upper end allocated as much as 25 pages of opulence-oozing imagery and painstaking scrutiny of every minute fact to this steel-hulled, aluminum-structured floating residence.

And those who didn’t get enough of Numptia in the printed media, had an opportunity to view it at the 21st Monaco Yacht Show in September, where it was hailed as one of the highlights among the 100 top meagayachts from around the globe.

The vessel launched in April in Genoa, after a three-year building process. It was completely custom-built for an unnamed Italian-born American businessman who wanted it for his multi-generational family.

Two specific things about Numptia have attracted the interest of the yachting world. Every aspect of Numptia was custom-created with the highest, most exquisite quality of design, materials, craftsmanship and functional performance. Even in the megayacht circles, this kind of grandeur and obsessive attention to quality and detail are rare.

The other unusual aspect is the fact that the owner selected a relatively unknown shipyard, Rossinavi Yachts of Viareggio to build it, and a little-known designer Salvagni Architetti of Rome to design the interiors.

Working closely with the owner, Achille Salvagni combined modern sensibilities with touches of traditional luxury to achieve a timeless feel of well-being. Every piece of furniture, every surface treatment, every doorknob and hinge was custom-designed for Numptia. Silk carpets woven in Tibet, solid marble in the steam bath, quartz floors in the galley, and an oval dining table covered in riveted alpaca nickel silver are just a few examples.

Exterior design of the vessel was completed by Design Studio Spadolini of Florence. Which to be honest i don’t really find spectacular compared to its interior.

Numptia features lavish rooms for up to 12 guests and includes an impressive master suite, a VIP suite, three queen-size double cabins and one twin stateroom. The owner’s suite includes a bedroom, TV area, reading room, his and hers dressing rooms and a bathroom with the solid-marble bath. Numerous common areas, sundecks, a spa deck plus crew accommodations and all behind-the-scenes space complete the spacious picture.

Numptia is available for charter through Burgess for about $646,000 per week, and for sale for an undisclosed price, rumored to be around $85 million.

UltraLuxum CXL- the biggest cruising trimaran in the world

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

This year at the Monaco Yacht Show, there was plenty to admire for those who liked spending their breaks at sea. Luxury Yachts and catamarans, which are some of the exotic toys the uber-rich are accepting and investing in, have been seeing a lot of innovation and upgrades, which were then highlighted at the largest show of its kind, and amongst them was the UltraLuxum CXL trimaran- the biggest in the world so far. The particular project of the yacht was created on behalf of the Albert II Foundation and its Wood Forever programme.
With eco-friendly designs gaining more notes with brands around the world, there has been a surge in preference and a resultant surge in vehicular concepts of this kind, including yachts and boats. Keeping this underlining theme, UltraLuxum has created what is now stated to be the largest trimaran in the world, aided with the most modern of luxury and technology features. Beginning with the hull of this boat, it is a 48 meter long structure, created entirely out of carbon fiber, making the body weight (110 tons) of this enormous vessel rather light. This would mean lesser fuel consumption, and easier for the sails at full mast to take the vessel for a glide in the waters. Though there are vessels larger in size, the modern designing within ensures optimal usage of space, thus adding many more sources of comfort inside.
For accommodation, there are the 2 guest cabins with bathrooms, 1 owner’s cabin with bathroom, staff cabins apart from the living area, which includes the lounge area, dining area, gallery, navigation and technical center. These major divisions lay the triple deck designing of the body. The amenities which one could find in these areas are the high-end entertainment system with flat screen TV, audio-video on demand, and high speed internet facilities. Since this trimanaran has been a concept so far, it offers numerous flexibilities for those who wish to modify the design for either personal or official purposes.
On the technical front, the boat has 2 sailing modes. The first sailing mode enables the use of the extra side skirting on both sides, to operate with the hybrid diesel-electric engine powered with Lithium ion batteries. Along with the 55meter long sails, the top speed could go to 20 to 25 knots. As one may know, such a hybrid design would reduce the carbon footprint considerably. On the other hand, if the sails are not used and engine alone propel the vessel, 15 knots isn’t really a far cry and stated to be the ideal cruising speed.

Designer Nick Meza envisions Floating Palace ‘R&R’ Yacht

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

What is to hold for the future of floating palaces, or megayachts as we call them? The answer to this question is what designer Nick Meza has done with his 75 meter water giant, aptly called ‘R&R’. This abbreviation stands for Rest & Relaxation, and this is precisely what will happen to those who end up buying this megayacht, which plans to provide the best in contemporary luxury for its occupants.
On the outside, one notice the play of white, black and the wooden brown colors, all aesthetically used in the vast solar panel, open deck and the rear end, and the white is seen on the ships long hull, and the taste of the future in the design is rather apparent. Speaking about the open deck at the back, one sees the open air swimming pool, lounge and sitting area, which can also double up as a sun bathing space. On the inside, there are the dining room and bar, covered lounge area with flat screen TV, cinema, owner’s suite on the upper deck and a library.
What one would see very commonly in the interior is the presence of the straight edge minimalistic design of the furniture and upholstery, with generous use of crafted and veneered wood on the walls, as well as the furniture. The contrast noticed here, is with the white lining and pillows of the sofas and chairs. The only other change in shape are the dining and bar tables which are elliptical, but carry the ever apparent straight edges. The owner’s suite on the upper deck is quite the splendor of space. The wood used is specially single grain textured, which is an aesthetic contrast to the black and white king sized bed, and full black easy chair. The door columns and ceilings are white though. Looking out of this suite, there is the open air sitting area with a sofa and table. Concerning the numbers, this yacht can pack in 11 guests, along with 19 crew members at the same time. The engine is divided into 2 Diesel and electric APP Marine compact engines, which generate 2000 KW of power each. The top speed is 19 knots, but the best cruise is recommended at 16 knots. The total displacement of the vessel is 1913 tons.

Fincantieri Yachts’ unveils 145m Fortissimo superyacht by Ken Freivokh Design

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Italy’s largest yacht maker, Ficantieri, has taken its status rather literally, and seems to be in the race for creating the largest yachts in the world. Very recently, we showed you the Serene mega-yacht which was 440 feet in length and is the 9th largest yacht in the world, and now surpassing that is the 145m (476 feet) long Fortissimo yacht, which will have all capabilities of a speed boat, reaching up to 35 knots of speed! Also, launching alongside is the Virage 88 yacht, which is yet to materialize on finer aspects of its design.
The Fortissimo is truly a fort-on-waters if one looks at it. All credits go to Ken Freivokh Design. With a 476 long hull and 8 decks in totality, it figures amongst the largest and also the heaviest in body weight (7000 tones approx.) than there are in the league. Powered by propulsion diesel engines, this will generate 70,000 KW of total displacement aided by the 4 water-jets which would be rather essential considering the dimensions. The cruising speed is supposed to be around the 18 knots mark, though it can top 35 knots if pushed as hard.

For the owner of the yacht, there is space for 8 guests in all, along with 48 crew members who would have their space in their own quarters. With 8 separate decks, the amenities could be multiple including spas, gymnasium, the obvious luxury suites, cinema and theatre, bars and dining, lounge, etc. Though recently unveiled, it is yet to be seen gliding in the waters, hence we might be held back on details of this mega-yacht. However, we also know that there is a sister yacht, the Virage 88 (pictured above) which is still at the conception stage. From the external designs revealed, it is too going to be a modern vessel but not sure if it will match the magnum opus status of the Fortissimo.

Arcadia 85 Superyacht – Symbolizing luxury eco-friendly cruising at sea

Friday, July 8th, 2011

While the moneyed and uber-rich splurge on luxuries and various customizations of their travelling vehicles, one thing which still has a long way to go is the concept of using eco-friendly technology in these vehicles. For those limited number of people who like a combination of eco-friendly technology and luxury travel, we have earlier covered the Palmer Johnson super yacht and the 006 super yacht, which have been models of eco-friendly luxury cruises, and adding to it is the Arcadia 85 super-yacht that has a negligible carbon footprint without compromising on luxury features.
The Arcadia 85, which is the second model from the yacht maker Edmiston & Company, allows holiday makers to undertake perfectly luxurious cruises, without leaving behind much of a carbon footprint. The yacht measures a total of 85ft in length, with a room to accommodate at least eight people at any given time. To power its battery recharging, air-conditioning, pumping, refrigeration and lighting, solar panels are placed at the rooftop, which generate the clean form of energy to power the functionalities of the boat. The fuel used to propel the engine is also organic in nature, which gives the power to reach a top speed of 18 knots to this boat.
Amenities on board include a spacious saloon in the top deck which is the main sitting area and entertainment area. The décor all around has been done up with a contemporary touch, with electronic sun blinds and floor to ceiling windows for super insulation. Among the “organic” amenities include the delicacies which the chef cooks up, but with organic ingredients, and the toiletry products feature a similar characteristic. For adventure water sports, the yacht has equipment including two seabobs, a PWC, two towable tubes, and snorkeling gear. In order to relax, one can use the full-beam master suite, or VIP stateroom, or even the two twin staterooms. The technical components to power this luxury boat include two Man R6 720HP engines, two Kholer 20KW power generators, a 120,000 BTU Condaria air-conditioning system and the unique Rodriguez Marine stabilizing system which gives the option to stabilize the boat comparable to zero-speed movements.
To hire this super yacht, one would have to shell out $70,172 a week apart from food and amenities.

A one-off trimaran

Monday, June 27th, 2011

After Audi’s trimaran yacht by German designer Stephanie Behringer, another futuristic trimaran yacht that has left us spell bound is this 42.5m Adastra trimaran, which is under production by John Shuttleworth Yacht Designs Ltd., based in West Sussex, England. This one-off superyacht is being built in China for the company’s clients Anto and Elaine Marden based in Hong Kong. The powerful trimaran is the result of more than 5 years of design to cater to the voyaging needs of the couple and their family. The super yacht is designed for efficient long range cruising, but its not just about the performance, every detail has been looked upon to make it one of the most luxurious super yachts.
The yacht features a striking design; the superstructure is carbon fibre with Nomex honeycomb core, the hull is Glass/Kevlar foam. Every part of the boat is custom built to make it light weight, including carbon fiber hatches, portlights, ladders and even hinges, which are all built specifically for the vessel. The vessel has a fully automated fuel management system including an Alfa Laval system for cleaning the fuel for low fuel consumption and efficient performance.
The structural design includes a 16 metre beam that features a saloon area on the main deck which offers superb panoramic views and accommodates a lounge area, dining table, and navigation station. The aft deck has space for a 4.9 metre tender and directly below is a garage, which can store a 3.1 metre tender. The garage door has been designed to fold out and create a large dive platform.
The master’s cabin is located at the aft with access from the deck saloon. Further, two guest cabins, and accommodation for the crew are located forward of the engine compartment below the deck by slightly flaring the central hull just above the waterline. Adastra offers comfortable accommodation for nine guests and up to six crew members.
The technical highlights include its unique anchoring system with 3 anchors all driven by carbon fibre drum winches run by hydraulics. The super yacht boasts a maximum speed of 22.5 knots and can cover 4000 miles at a range of 17 knots. The yacht is being built at McConaghy Boats, Zhuhai, China.
